So you want to learn how to play the guitar. You also bought A great guitar and you even have the right online lessons or a private teacher ready to start teaching you. Before you jump into the deep water, let’s start with some elementary things that you must be acquainted with before the first note or chord is played. The main reason is that every journey and even guitar playing is a journey (that never ends, but it is a topic for another article) starts with basic small steps. In guitar playing the basic step will lead you to much better understanding, hence knowledge and ability to master the guitar in later stages.

When you will begin your guitar lessons you will learn everything about chords, notes, tabs, scales, fingering, how to hold the guitar and much more, but the most basic information is the anatomy of a guitar and what the different parts of it are. So when your teacher tells you to hold the neck you will put your fingers on the thin part of the guitar and not on your own (or your teacher’s) neck

The guitar is comprised of 6 main parts. For electric guitar there are add-ons such as amplifier but here we will focus on the basic acoustic guitar.

The first and most evident part is the body. It is the big wooden part of the guitar.

The second part is the thin part and it is called the neck

Guitar’s bridge is the part that is on the body of the guitar next to the hole

Everyone knows what are the strings but in case you didn’t they are the long wires starting on the guitar’s body and end at the pegs next to the head of the guitar

Guitar’s head is the part that is connected to the neck on the other side from the guitar’s body

The metal lines on the neck of the guitar called frets. They are used to make different sounds and it is done when the guitar player press the strings into the frets and the string vibrate. Since the string length varies based on which fret the player pressed the sound that is created also varies.

Holding the guitar is also essential thing. For right handed people, simply hold the body with your right hand next to the hole and your left hand on the frets. For left handed people it is the other way around.

And don’t forget – great players are so great simply because they practice all the time. Practice makes us perfect.
